Important Statement from the Board of Directors - Stockton Pride Inc.
Dear Stockton Pride Community,
The Board of Directors of Stockton Pride Inc. wishes to address an important matter concerning our organization's identity and its separation from our former fiscal sponsor, the San Joaquin Pride Center (SJPC).
In November of the previous year, our Board convened to discuss a fundamental decision - breaking away from our fiscal sponsorship with the SJPC. This was not a choice we made lightly, but one we felt compelled to undertake due to a fundamental misalignment with their practices, particularly in regard to how they treated leaders of color within the organization.
We were deeply concerned by the treatment of the previous Executive Director, a transwoman of color, which we found unacceptable. These actions left us with no choice but to dissolve our affiliation with the SJPC and take steps to establish our own independent identity. To this end, we incorporated as an independent entity within the state of California and applied for our own 501(c)3 status, which was granted earlier this year.
In our pursuit of a respectful and amicable separation, we communicated our intentions to the new leadership at SJPC. Regrettably, our attempts at dialogue were met with silence. To protect our identity and the integrity of our mission, we served the SJPC Center Manager, their Pride Committee, and their Board of Directors a cease and desist letter, requesting that they refrain from using the Stockton Pride name.
Despite our efforts to engage in a constructive and respectful manner, our correspondence has gone unanswered. We find ourselves in the position where we must assert our legal rights to protect our name and the values it represents. We have a duty to preserve the legacy and principles that Stockton Pride Inc. was founded upon.
Today, we have observed that the SJPC continues to use our legally incorporated name for their events, which compels us to proceed with necessary legal actions. It is crucial to clarify that the event hosted by the SJPC is in no way associated with Stockton Pride Inc. Our intent is not to oppose any event, but solely to protect the use of our name.
Stockton Pride Inc. remains dedicated to serving our community with authenticity, inclusivity, and respect. We appreciate your continued support and understanding as we navigate this challenge. We want to assure you that our commitment to our community and our mission is unwavering.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Board of Directors
Stockton Pride Inc.
